Healing Roots Gardens helped the Harper family establish a resourceful homestead garden:

The Harper family had always wanted to grow their own food, but they didn’t have much space or money to start a garden. They had a small backyard with some grass and a few trees, but they didn’t know how to turn it into a productive and beautiful garden. They also had a lot of old materials lying around, reclaimed wood, trellises and a compost pile but they didn’t know how to use them for gardening.

That’s when they asked Christina Denker with Healing Roots Gardens, in Brooksville, FL to teach them how to grow food using sustainable and creative methods. With the help of Healing Roots Gardens, the Harper family transformed their backyard into a resourceful homestead garden. They used the materials they had on hand to build raised beds, trellises, containers. They planted a variety of vegetables and fruits that they liked to eat, such as tomatoes, peppers, zucchini, Swiss chard, green beans, potatoes, lettuce, cucumbers, and edible flowers. They also used companion planting, crop rotation, and organic pest control to enhance the growth and health of their plants.

The Harper family was amazed by the results of their homestead garden. They harvested a bounty of fresh produce that they could enjoy and share with their neighbors. Their tomatoes were especially prolific, producing 20 lbs a day at the peak of the spring season. They also had fun experimenting with different recipes and preserving methods, such as canning, freezing, and drying. They even made their own salsa, sauce, and ketchup from their tomatoes.

The homestead garden was also a great family project that brought the Harper family closer together. The parents and the kids loved being involved in every stage of the gardening process, from planning and planting to harvesting and cooking. They learned a lot about gardening, nature, and themselves. They also felt more connected to their community and the environment. The homestead garden was a source of joy, satisfaction, and empowerment for the Harper family.
