What to do and what to plant in June 2025
Hi Gardening and Wellness Friends 👋🏼
Summer is officially here in Florida this month with June bringing the summer solstice, but our temperatures feel like we have already been blessed with summer. You’ll notice with the temperature and humidity consistently high the bugs will be the most active. Though we’ve planted the herbs and flowers to bring in the beneficial insects, we’ll need a little help this summer. Any of these organic products can be utilized to maintain pest control within the garden this time of year. Use them early in the morning at sun rise or late in the evening as the sun is setting. This will ensure the beneficial insects aren’t harmed.
If choosing to garden this summer, here’s what can be done :
weed and remove any leftover spring plants from your garden beds that have completed their fruiting cycle
test the irrigation system and ensure it’s functioning properly. If we are getting consistent afternoon rain showers 3 to 4 days a week, then change the setting on the system to water every 3rd day.
amend the soil if planting heavy feeders such as peppers, squash, luffa or eggplant
add a layer of compost to the beds if planting new plants
pickup organic plant starts from The Organic Harvest
replant a new set of flowers so they’ll be blooms throughout summer. the best flowers this time of year are sunflower, zinnia and celosia
monitor any pest/insect pressure. Handpick any pests and dunk into a soapy bucket of water, or any of these organic products can be utilized
If choosing not to garden this summer 🙋♀️ here’s what can be done:
pull all weeds and plants from the garden bed
use a large tarp and lay it over the garden bed. secure the sides with bricks or objects to hold down the tarp. keep the tarp over the garden for the duration of summer until ready to prepare the bed for the fall growing season. this will keep weed seeds from flying into the empty bed and it will kill any weeds that are trying to grow under the tarp
