What to do and what to plant in August 2025

Hi Gardening and Wellness Friends 👋🏼

We’ll be in the dog days of Summer this month. If you haven’t let your garden go to the wayside, then you know how challenging it is to keep everything from eating it. The beneficial insects are working overtime, but they’ll need extra help right now. Any of these organic products can be utilized to maintain pest control within the garden this time of year. Use them early in the morning at sun rise or late in the evening as the sun is setting. This will ensure the beneficial insects aren’t harmed.

August is a vital month. It’s the month we get our gardens set for the fall season. I’ll share what can be done now if you’re still gardening and then I’ll share what you can do to prepare for the fall garden.

If choosing to garden this summer, here’s what can be done now:

  • weed and remove any leftover plants from your garden beds that have completed their fruiting cycle

  • test the irrigation system and ensure it’s functioning properly. If we are getting consistent afternoon rain showers 3 to 4 days a week, then change the setting on the system to water every 3rd day. If we are getting consistent rain every day, the irrigation can be turned off

  • amend the soil if planting heavy feeders such as squash, corn, peppers, tomatoes or eggplant

  • add a layer of compost to the beds if planting new plants

  • pickup organic plant starts from The Organic Harvest

  • replant a new set of flowers so they’ll be blooms throughout fall. the best flowers this time of year are sunflower, zinnia and celosia

  • monitor any pest/insect pressure. Handpick any pests and dunk into a soapy bucket of water, or any of these organic products can be utilized

Here’s what you can do to get your fall garden ready:

  • pull all weeds and plants from the garden bed(s) that aren’t being used

  • add a layer 1-2” thick of compost

  • cover the bed until next month so weed seeds don’t germinate

  • seed start your fall plants to be planted out in September and October.
