What to do and what to plant in September 2025

Hi Gardening and Wellness Friends 👋🏼

The start of Fall begins on the 22nd, and I’m speaking for myself but I’m looking forward to the slightly cooler weather. Rather than the 90’s we’ve been facing the last month, I look forward to getting back into the 80’s.

This is a big month in the Florida gardening world. The last few weeks the gardeners in the Fall Cohort have been focusing their efforts on refreshing their garden beds and starting seeds in preparation of this month. We’re completing our fall transplants into the garden beds this month. Taking advantage of the last bits of summer with planting tomatoes, peppers, beans, cucumbers and squash. Preparing for the cooler weather by planting carrots, radishes, onions, arugula and all the fall/winter brassicas. We’ll still have to be focused on maintaining pest control because of the heat while the beneficial insects are working overtime. Any of these organic products can be utilized. Use them early in the morning at sun rise or late in the evening as the sun is setting. This will ensure the beneficial insects aren’t harmed.

For our fall gardens, here’s what we can do now:

  • weed and remove any leftover plants from the garden beds that have completed their fruiting cycle

  • test the irrigation system and ensure it’s functioning properly. If we are getting consistent afternoon rain showers 3 to 4 days a week, then change the setting on the system to water every 3rd day. If we are getting consistent rain every day, the irrigation can be turned off

  • amend the soil if planting heavy feeders such as squash, corn, peppers, tomatoes or eggplant

  • add a 1” to 2” layer of compost to the beds for the new growing season

  • order organic plant starts from The Organic Harvest

  • replant a new set of flowers so they’ll be blooms throughout fall. the best flowers this time of year are sunflower, zinnia and celosia

  • add new herbs to the beds-all herbs thrive in the cooler weather that’s coming. download an herb guide here. add the guide to your cart and use code freeherbs to receive the guide for free until the first day of Fall, the Autumnal Equinox: September 22, 2025 at midnight

  • monitor any pest/insect pressure. handpick any pests and dunk into a soapy bucket of water, or any of these organic products can be utilized

  • transplant and seed the fall garden
